BC TEAL: Message from the Board, Events, and Membership Update

Message From the BC TEAL Board of Directors

Dear BC TEAL Community,

I hope you are well and finding time for the things that make you smile.

We have had a busy fall with BC TEAL presenting a number of successful events. Your board has also been hard at work behind the scenes to ensure BC TEAL can continue to provide you with opportunities for PD and connection to the BC TEAL community.

One of our main concerns is the financial impact of COVID. To offset some of our expenses the board has decided to give up our physical office location. You may not notice any changes as the phone number, email addresses and online presence will remain as is. However, in order to facilitate the move, the office will be closed from December 14, 2020 to January 15, 2020.

We at BC TEAL wish you and yours a very happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and for the exciting things we have planned for 2021.

Cindi Jones
President, BC TEAL

Beyond Celebrating Diversity: Basic Principles of Anti-Racist Education
Thursday, November 26, 2020 at 7:00 pm

In this presentation, Dr. Traoré will discuss how conventional education marginalizes racialized students through acts of omission, othering, and dysconscious racism, and provide an overview of the basic tenants of anti-racism education theory. Participants will also get some recommendations on cultivating anti-racism in the classroom beyond ‘the three S’ celebratory approach of multiculturalism: “saris, samosas, and steel bands”. This talk is best suited for persons who have some awareness of systemic racism, and would like to engage in anti-racism.

Dr. Ismaël Traoré is a racial inclusion and equity educator and specialist. At the heart of his work, is anti-racist organizational change through evidence-based practices. He is interested in issues of power and privilege, community engagement, and the social determinants of health. In his role at UBC, he supports the implementation of diversity and inclusion plans across the university.

November 27, 10:00-11:30 AM
Facilitator: Anu Pala, SIETAR BC Board Member

The evolution of media and technology has transformed the way we communicate, teach, learn, play, and connect to community. Whether it’s social media, virtual classrooms, or the infamous ‘Cloud,’ the way we access and share information has changed. As a result, teachers have to work hard to develop creative content in order to keep their students engaged. Ensuring that classrooms are inclusive to all students of varying abilities is paramount. While the digital door is open, is it truly accessible to all students? This interactive workshop will discuss the unique challenges of students with vision loss and provide teachers with the necessary tools and resources to set them up for success. To Register, Click Here.
